Tree Planting & Preservation Committee

The TPPC believes that trees are central to our enjoyment of Rossmoor – as well as being critical in our battle against climate change.

The members of the committee find ways to support broader efforts to preserve trees, especially within our local geographic area. But mostly the committee is focused on Rossmoor itself – how can we best preserve the marvelous trees already here, and what new trees should we plant and where?

Action Steps

The TPPC has created a series of action steps that explain the importance of planting and preserving trees to address the climate crisis. Other action steps provide suggestions on how to contribute to existing tropical and temperate forest restoration programs, and to participate in Northern California tree planting and watering activities.

Action 1. Study the various technology, land sink and behavior solutions to address climate change, including their potential impact and total cost.

Creating land sinks to capture carbon in the atmosphere by restoring and preserving forests is an important solution to address climate change.

According to Project Drawdown, Tropical Forest Restoration, Temperate Forest Restoration, and Tree Plantations (on degraded grounds) are all in the top 20 of 100 solutions to address climate change.

Learn more about the 100 possible solutions to climate change by clicking on this link to the Project Drawdown Table of Solutions. Click on Sector io re-sort the list of solutions by type of sector. Scroll until you find all Land Sink Solutions. Click on the words Tropical Forest Restoration, Temperate Forest Restoration, and Tree Plantations to read more about these solutions. Quickly scan the other 98 solutions.

Action 2.  Change your web browser to Ecosia and Combat Climate Change from Your Home

You can combat climate change by doing what you already do, searching the Internet. A unique search engine called Ecosia allows its users to help remove carbon from the air. Every time you search online with Ecosia and click on a sponsored ad, money is set aside to plant trees in a rainforest. You also give the economically disenfranchised a way of making a living by planting trees. You can offset your entire carbon footprint by clicking on only nine sponsored ads per day.

Created by Christian Kroll as Germany’s first B corporation, a company whose mission is to increase social good and not to profit its stockholders, Ecosia uses at least 80 percent of its profits from ads to plant trees in rainforests in conjunction with local tree planting groups. Since its beginning ten years ago, Ecosia has become the world’s largest planter of trees. So far Ecosia has planted over 109 million trees and the rate of planting is steadily increasing!

By making Ecosia your default search engine on your computer and smart phone you can fight climate change. You can also ask your alma mater or employer to make Ecosia their default search engine, thereby multiplying the positive effects. Ecosia is available as an extension for most web browsers. At the Chrome web store, search for “Ecosia-the-search-engine.” It can also be downloaded as an app for most smartphones
