Featured Tree of the Month

Many residents have expressed their pleasure at seeing so many kinds of trees, some they had never been aware of before, when first coming to live in Rossmoor. The Dollar family planted a lot of trees, many of which they saw on their extensive world travels. Residents have told us that learning the trees' names and characteristics in the published articles in the Rossmoor News has enhanced their enjoyment and value of the trees. In this awareness and appreciation, it is hoped that people will make responsible decisions about their planting and care.

The articles are meant to not only inform about the great variety of trees in Rossmoor but also their environmental impact in these challenging times. With increasing heat and accompanying drought, questions such as the following are addressed in the articles: How much water does the tree require? How does it respond to fire? How much sun and/or shade does it need? How large does it grow? Is the tree a native species adapted to grow in California? Which trees should we be planting today, and which should we avoid given the current climate?

Members of the Tree Planting and Preservation Committee were responsible for researching and writing the articles.
